Treating Childhood Speech Sound Disorders: Current Approaches to Management by Australian Speech-Language Pathologists

Purpose This study explored the intervention processes used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to treat children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). Method Semistructured, individual, in-depth interviews were conducted 11 Australian SLPs. Inductive content analysis was classify data provide a description of current for SSDs. Results Three main factors identified relating SLPs: (a) target selection, (b) therapy approaches, and (c) structural procedural aspects sessions, including feedback. The findings revealed that SLPs often combine elements four therapies: minimal pairs approach, traditional articulatory auditory discrimination, Cued Articulation. Initial targets typically aligned developmental approach or functional meaningful relevance child their family. Conclusions These contribute state knowledge about use hybrid pathology therapies, which combined favored common. Hybrid methods intended help tailor interventions individual needs. Client needs highly prioritized influenced choice approaches.
